Who we are

Shanghai Guanghua Qidi College was established by Guanghua Education Group in November 2014 and opened its first campus in April 2015. It is a full-time international high school teaching the IGCSE and A Level curriculum in English across all subjects, alongside an art portfolio pathway delivered through the Guanghua Haoqi Art Center. The school operates two campuses in Shanghai — Yangpu and Dianshan Lake — which follow the same academic standards and assessment system, and between which students and faculty may choose. The Dianshan Lake campus is residential and accredited by Cognia.

The School of One idea

In 2009 the New York City Department of Education launched School of One, a pilot that shifts the unit of planning from the class to the individual learner and uses scheduling technology to give each student the sequence of instruction they are actually ready for; Time magazine named it one of the 50 best inventions of that year. Guanghua Qidi brought that model to secondary education in China and combined it with the Chinese pedagogical principle of teaching according to aptitude. Teaching is organised as micro-classes led by specialist mentors: every student is assigned a personal mentor and follows a timetable and university plan built around them, over a course of study lasting one to three years depending on their starting point.

How it works in practice

Small classes

Classes normally run with three to eight students. Teachers can track each student’s progress directly, and students receive instruction pitched at the level they are working at.

An individual timetable

Each student has their own timetable and application calendar covering subject teaching, English language preparation and university deadlines. Both are revised as the student progresses.

Personal mentors

Every student is assigned a personal mentor who is responsible for course selection, university planning and communication with the family from enrollment through graduation, and who remains the family’s consistent point of contact.

A choice of examination board

The school is a registered examination centre for CAIE, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford International AQA, so students can combine subjects across boards and sit the specification that best fits their strengths and university plans.

An in-house school platform

Course selection, timetable changes, lesson feedback, examination registration and boarding arrangements are handled in a system built by the school. Mentors and parents can see a student’s academic record as it is created.
